Three people were killed in a shooting in central Uppsala on Tuesday, police confirmed, as the city began celebrations for Walpurgis Night.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after multiple gunshots were reported. Witnesses told SVT they heard at least five shots and saw people running for cover. According to Swedish media, the shooting took place near or inside a hair salon.
Police have launched a murder investigation and are searching for a suspect. "Three people are confirmed dead after a shooting," police said in a statement.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer called it "a brutal act of violence," and said his ministry was closely monitoring the case.
Sweden has been grappling with a surge in gang-related violence for more than a decade. In February, ten people were killed in Orebro in the country's deadliest mass shooting, prompting the government to promise tighter gun laws and stronger police powers.
The latest violence comes as Sweden tries to curb a persistent wave of shootings linked to organised crime.
