Brice Oligui Nguema has secured 90.35% of votes in Gabon’s presidential election, extending his hold on power after the 2023 coup.
Gabon’s coup leader Brice Oligui Nguema has won the presidential election with 90.35% of the vote, according to provisional results.
Nguema, 50, ended more than five decades of Bongo family rule in August 2023, taking power as transitional president and pledging to restore democracy.
The result cements Nguema’s hold on power, 19 months after the coup in the oil-rich nation of around 2.5 million people.
His main challenger in the eight-candidate race was Alain Claude Bilie By Nze, who served as prime minister under President Ali Bongo at the time of the coup. Nze, 57, secured 3.02% of the vote, according to the preliminary tally.
