Authorities in Nigeria’s Borno state have called for stronger security after a deadly landmine blast left several bus passengers dead and others critically injured.
At least eight people have been killed after a bus struck a landmine along the Maiduguri-Damboa road in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state.
Landmines are common in the region, where the Islamist group Boko Haram frequently targets security forces and civilian communities, and has previously kidnapped hundreds of schoolchildren.
After losing control of large areas they once held, militants have increasingly turned to planting landmines on highways.
Officials said seven other passengers were taken to intensive care in Maiduguri, while 14 others sustained minor injuries.
Authorities have called on security forces to step up efforts to combat insurgents and secure major roads across the state.
