Pope Francis made a surprise appearance at the Vatican on Sunday, his first since being hospitalized with pneumonia in mid-February. The 88-year-old pontiff had been recovering from acute respiratory insufficiency following his admission to Gemelli Hospital on February 14.
During a special mass dedicated to the sick, Pope Francis was seen in a wheelchair as he greeted crowds in Saint Peter's Square. "A good Sunday to all. Thank you very much," he said, his voice noticeably fragile but stronger than during his hospital discharge on March 23.
Still connected to nasal breathing tubes, the Pope was warmly received by worshippers capturing the moment with smartphones and cameras. His presence marked a significant step in his recovery, and a reassuring moment for many of the faithful.
