U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi has directed prosecutors to pursue the death penalty in the federal case against Luigi Mangione, who is charged in connection with the death of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione denies state charges and faces a separate federal indictment.

U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi has instructed federal prosecutors to pursue the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, who is accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealth Group Chief Executive Brian Thompson in New York last year.

Mangione's legal representatives have not yet responded to requests for comment.

He has pleaded not guilty to New York state charges of murder as an act of terrorism and weapons offences. If convicted on state charges, he could face life imprisonment without parole, as New York does not impose the death penalty.

Mangione is also facing a separate federal indictment in connection with Thompson’s killing. A conviction in the federal case could result in the death penalty. He has not yet entered a plea for the federal charges.
