A powerful earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, according to earthquake monitoring services, with the tremors also being felt in Bangkok, where hundreds of people fled buildings in panic.
There was no immediate report from Myanmar on any damage caused by the quake, which the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded at a magnitude of 7.7 and a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
The epicentre was located approximately 17.2 km from Mandalay, a city with a population of around 1.2 million, according to USGS data.
Eyewitnesses in Bangkok described scenes of panic as people rushed onto the streets, while water was seen spilling out of swimming pools.
