Canada’s Liberals pick Trudeau’s successor amid Trump tensions

Canada’s Liberal Party is set to elect a new leader on March 9, moving beyond Justin Trudeau’s decade in power. The race comes as U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats against Canada fuel a wave of patriotism ahead of an expected election.

The Liberal leadership race is led by Mark Carney, former Bank of Canada and Bank of England chief, and ex-Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. The party, trailing in polls, hopes to win back conservative-leaning voters while distancing itself from Trudeau’s unpopularity.

Trump’s trade threats and repeated remarks about annexing Canada have shifted voter focus. Analysts say this has boosted national unity, giving the Liberals a chance to recover.

Leadership candidates have also dropped Trudeau-era policies, including his carbon tax, and have backed tighter immigration controls and stronger defence spending.

With a general election due by October, the Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre still lead but by a smaller margin. The Liberals hope their new leader will be seen as a stable alternative to Trump-aligned populism.
