Tensions erupted at the White House as Trump told Zelenskyy, “You don’t have the cards,” prompting a sharp reply: “I am not playing cards. I am very serious, Mr. President.” The heated exchange exposed deep divisions over Ukraine’s war, NATO, and U.S. support.
From the start, Trump pressured Zelenskyy to negotiate with Russia, warning, “You’re gambling with World War Three.” He insisted Ukraine must seek peace. Zelenskyy shot back, “No compromises with a killer,” making it clear he wouldn’t accept a deal on Putin’s terms.
As tensions rose, Trump accused Zelenskyy of being ungrateful for U.S. aid, demanding, “Have you said thank you once this entire meeting?” Zelenskyy responded that Ukraine was grateful but also fighting for Europe’s security and could not accept peace on Russia’s terms.
When asked about U.S. troops in Eastern Europe, Trump reaffirmed support for Poland and the Baltics but demanded NATO allies contribute more, saying, “Why is the U.S. paying more than Europe?” Zelenskyy countered that Ukraine was the “defensive line” for Europe, bearing the brunt of Russia’s aggression.
Trump pushed for an immediate ceasefire, arguing that stopping the fighting would pave the way for peace. Zelenskyy refused to agree without firm security guarantees, warning Russia could use a truce to regroup.
When asked about a possible trilateral summit with Putin, Trump admitted, “They do not like each other. This is not a love match.” He blamed past U.S. administrations for allowing the war to escalate and insisted he could “make a deal.” Zelenskyy, however, stood firm: “This is Russia’s war against Ukraine. Not the U.S.”
As tensions peaked, Trump told Zelenskyy, “You don’t have the cards.” He argued that without U.S. backing, Ukraine had little leverage. Zelenskyy immediately fired back, “I am not playing cards. I am very serious, Mr. President.” He rejected the idea that Ukraine was gambling with its future, insisting that Ukraine would continue fighting with or without U.S. support.
