Japan battles raging wildfire as thousands evacuate

A massive wildfire in northeastern Japan forced thousands to evacuate as it damaged buildings and prompted military helicopters to battle the flames, local media reported Thursday.

Aerial footage from NHK showed helicopters dousing fires in forested areas of Ofunato, Iwate prefecture. The blaze has destroyed at least 84 buildings and displaced 2,000 residents. Rescuers discovered a burned body, with police investigating its connection to the fire.

Ofunato Mayor Kiyoshi Fuchigami called the wildfire “large-scale,” citing strong western winds that spread smaller fires. So far, about 600 hectares (1,500 acres) have burned.

Earlier, a fire in Ofunato on February 19 was mostly extinguished by Tuesday, while another in Rikuzentakata on Tuesday was contained by Wednesday. The cause remains unknown.
