Marleix, 54, was a senior figure in the conservative Republicans party and had previously led the party’s group in the National Assembly.
French media reported that he was found hanged. Authorities have opened an investigation, and an autopsy is planned to determine the exact cause of death.
News of his passing prompted a moment of silence in the French Parliament. President Emmanuel Macron expressed his condolences in a post on X, describing Marleix as a committed politician.
“The death of Olivier Marleix plunges our Parliament into mourning. An experienced politician, he defended his ideas with conviction. I also respected our differences, as they were rooted in our shared love for the country,” Macron wrote.
