At least two people lost their lives and five others were injured on Tuesday following a collapse at a highway construction site in the South Korean city of Cheonan, according to fire authorities.

The incident occurred at 9:49 a.m. (0049 GMT) when five 50-metre (164.04 ft) steel structures supporting the highway bridge collapsed sequentially after being lifted into position by a crane, the Yonhap news agency reported.

Earlier, Yonhap had reported three fatalities, but the national fire agency later confirmed that two people had died so far, while five others sustained injuries, including four in critical condition.

Authorities were also searching for another three individuals believed to be trapped beneath the rubble at the site, the report added.

Broadcaster YTN aired dramatic footage capturing the moment a section of the towering bridge collapsed at the construction site in Cheonan, located south of the capital, Seoul.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok called for the deployment of all available personnel and resources to rescue any missing individuals and to implement safety measures to prevent further harm, his office stated.
