Ukraine marked three years of war with Russia by hosting European leaders, while U.S. President Donald Trump's absence hinted at a shift towards Moscow. Donald Trump suggested the conflict could end soon and proposed major economic deals with Russia.
Ukraine hosted European leaders on Monday to mark three years since Russia's invasion, while U.S. President Donald Trump's absence signaled a shift in focus toward Moscow. Trump called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a "dictator" and said the war could end within weeks.
Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna said Kyiv was finalising a minerals deal with Washington, though disagreements over security guarantees remain. Zelenskyy previously refused a draft demanding $500 billion worth of natural wealth, arguing Ukraine has received far less in U.S. aid.
During a summit in Kyiv, Zelenskyy emphasised that peace must be won through strength and unity, as Russian President Vladimir Putin would not grant it willingly. European leaders pledged continued support, while EU chief Ursula von der Leyen suggested Ukraine could join the bloc by 2030 if reforms continue.
Trump’s willingness to engage with Moscow has raised concerns among European officials, who fear that a U.S. focus away from European security could impact the war’s outcome. Trump also mentioned ongoing talks with Putin about economic development, and said he was willing to visit Moscow.
Meanwhile, Russia launched 185 drones against Ukraine overnight, causing no significant damage. Ukraine said it hit Russia's Ryazan refinery, continuing its efforts to target oil infrastructure.
