British Broadcasting corporation, BBC has suspended its local language news service in Azerbaijan.
In a statement released by the media organization on Thursday, it states that it has made the “reluctant decision” to close down its offices in the country’s capital Baku and “suspend the activities of its excellent journalists”.
The statement also explained that it took these actions following a “verbal request from the Ministry of Foreign affairs of Azerbaijan”.
The BBC has said that it is in contact with the country’s government to clarify its instructions while trying to resolve the situation.
It is not clear if these actions are temporary or will remain in place permanently.
BBC News Azerbaijani started operations in 1994 when it began broadcasting on the radio and later online.
