African leaders are gathering in Addis Ababa this weekend under the theme “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.” The summit focuses on addressing colonial injustices and advocating for reparations for affected communities.
Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, emphasized that reparations are a call for justice, not charity. He stressed the importance of a transformative process to right past wrongs.
"The demand for reparations is not about charity or financial aid. It is a call for justice," Abiy Ahmed stated.
Due to ongoing tensions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, President Felix Tshisekedi sent his Prime Minister to the summit in his place, as Rwanda-backed M23 rebels continue their advances.
The summit is set to conclude tomorrow, with a final statement expected on reparations and regional security issues.
