At least 23 people lost their lives late on Thursday when a truck carrying both passengers and goods overturned in the northern Nigerian city of Kano, a road safety official confirmed on Friday.
According to Abdullahi Labaran, spokesman for the federal road safety corps (FRSC) in Kano, the driver lost control of the vehicle before it veered off the road and plunged into an underpass in the Hotoro district, located on the outskirts of the city.
The truck had been travelling from Maiduguri in the northeast towards Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub in the southwest. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, highlighting ongoing concerns over road safety in the country.
