Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday (February 13), discussing tariff concessions, trade deals, and strategic cooperation on China amid concerns over a looming trade war.
Trump, who recently announced reciprocal tariffs, has called India a “big abuser” on trade. Modi’s visit aimed to ease tensions, with India offering to increase U.S. energy and defense purchases, according to officials.
The U.S.-India trade deficit stands at $45.6 billion, with tariffs being a key issue. Indian officials are also exploring new deals on agriculture, nuclear energy, and manufacturing.
Discussions also touched on security concerns, including unauthorized immigration and India’s continued ties with Russia.
Despite geopolitical complexities, Trump and Modi signaled progress toward a trade agreement, with Trump stating that major deals would be announced soon.
