German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has warned that the European Union is prepared to respond “within an hour” if the United States imposes tariffs. His statement came during a pre-election debate, where he affirmed that the EU has countermeasures ready.
Speaking in a televised debate against his conservative challenger Friedrich Merz, Scholz was asked whether the EU had a "list of cruelties" to retaliate against potential U.S. tariffs. He confirmed that Brussels is ready to act immediately if Washington moves forward with trade restrictions.
"Yes, to phrase it in the most cautious diplomatic way. We as the European Union can act within an hour," Scholz said.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the EU and other major trading partners, accusing them of benefiting unfairly from U.S. economic strength. His administration has threatened new tariffs, escalating concerns of a trade dispute.
