U.S. President Donald Trump said early Wednesday that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would be arranged soon, while leaving the door open to further U.S. strikes on Iran following next week's midterm elections.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after campaign rallies in Texas, Trump said he had discussed both conflicts with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
“I think with Russia we're making a lot of progress with Russia-Ukraine. There'll be a meeting set up very soon,” he said.
Asked who would attend, Trump replied, “President Putin and President Zelenskyy,” but gave no further details about when or where the meeting might take place, or its format.
Moscow and Kyiv held three rounds of U.S.-mediated peace talks in January and February in Abu Dhabi and Geneva. A face-to-face meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy would be their first since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
On Iran, Trump claimed Tehran was seeking a deal with Washington but appeared to be delaying negotiations until after the 3 November midterm elections.
“I think with Iran, we're in a very good position. It's a question of, when do I want to end it?” he said, repeating his recent assessment of the conflict.
Pressed on whether he would order further strikes against Iran after the elections, Trump refused to rule out military action.
“Anything's possible, but I can't tell you,” he said.
The conflict began with U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, sparking a wider regional war. Despite a ceasefire and an agreement to finalise a peace deal, a lasting resolution remains elusive.
