U.S. President Donald Trump has endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the country’s parliamentary election on 27 October, praising him as a strong leader and a partner in the war with Iran.

In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump called Netanyahu a “great warrior prime minister” and credited him with joining the United States in launching strikes on Iran in February.

“Bibi Netanyahu has been Strong, Brave, and Brilliant in the face of tremendous opposition, including that coming from even Israel, itself,” Trump wrote.

In a message addressed to the Israeli public, he added: “Please let this Letter serve to represent my Complete and Total Endorsement of Bibi Netanyahu in his upcoming Race for Re-Election as Prime Minister of Israel.”

Netanyahu thanked Trump in a post on X, writing: “Together we will complete the mission!”

Tight race

Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party faces a competitive election, with polls suggesting that neither his bloc nor his opponents has a clear path to a parliamentary majority.

Israelis do not vote for the prime minister directly. Instead, the leader best able to assemble a governing coalition in the 120-seat Knesset is usually tasked with forming a government.

The vote comes as the war with Iran, which began in February, continues to disrupt global energy markets and damage infrastructure across the Middle East.

Uncertain impact

It remains unclear whether Trump’s backing will strengthen Netanyahu’s position, as disagreements between Washington and Israel over the Iran war have weighed on the U.S. president’s standing among Israelis.

Trump has broken with longstanding U.S. practice by openly endorsing candidates in foreign elections, including in Hungary and Argentina.
