A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s North Maluku province early Tuesday, though it did not trigger a tsunami warning, Xinhua reports, citing the country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.
The agency initially reported the quake’s magnitude as 6.2 before later revising it. It occurred at 04:35 a.m. Jakarta time Tuesday (2135 GMT Monday), with its epicentre located 86 km northeast of Doi Island in North Halmahera regency, at a depth of 105 km beneath the seabed.
No tsunami alert was issued as the tremors were not expected to generate significant waves.
Indonesia, an archipelagic nation, sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone where tectonic plates frequently collide, making the country highly susceptible to earthquakes.
