The arrest of former German intelligence chief August Hanning on espionage-related charges has drawn renewed attention to his past connections with Israeli security figures and a controversial cross-border child custody case generating significant public scrutiny.
German authorities are investigating Hanning on allegations including espionage, handling state secrets and treason-related offences.
While details of the espionage case remain limited, the development has revived interest in a separate investigation concerning the 2024 removal of two children from Denmark to Germany amid a bitter custody dispute.
The case involves German businesswoman Christina Block and her former husband, Stefan Hensel, whose two children were reportedly taken from Denmark to Germany on New Year's Eve 2024.
According to testimony previously given by Hensel, individuals connected to an Israeli security firm allegedly intercepted the children and transported them across the border.
Hanning, who served on the board of a security company linked to the allegations, has been accused of playing a role in the operation.
The claims were revisited after Hanning's recent detention, prompting renewed examination of relationships between former intelligence officials, private security networks and international custody disputes.
The controversy has also drawn attention to Hanning's reported contacts with former senior Israeli intelligence figures.
Previous testimony cited by media reports alleged that former Mossad director Danny Yatom was aware of, or connected to, aspects of the operation. Hensel claimed Hanning had contacted Yatom regarding the case.
Yatom later acknowledged knowing Hanning but publicly denied any involvement in the removal of the children.
Another former Israeli intelligence chief, Yaakov Peri, who previously led the Shin Bet internal security service and later headed a private security company, was also named in allegations connected to the case.
According to claims contained in legal filings, Hanning allegedly approached Peri seeking assistance in forming a team that could carry out the operation. Peri's company denied any involvement and rejected the allegations.
The latest legal troubles for the former intelligence official appear to stem from evidence collected during a separate investigation.
German prosecutors searched Hanning's residence in September 2025 as part of an inquiry involving Christina Block and several other individuals connected to the custody dispute.
Material seized during that operation reportedly prompted investigators to refer parts of the case to Germany's federal prosecutors, who have responsibility for matters involving espionage, national security and treason.
The transfer of the investigation significantly raised the stakes of the inquiry, moving it beyond a custody dispute and into the realm of state security.
Hanning is one of the most prominent figures ever to lead Germany's foreign intelligence service, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND). Following his departure from government service, he worked as an international security consultant and maintained extensive contacts within intelligence and security circles.
German media reports have also suggested he had longstanding ties to Israeli security and intelligence communities. They also indicated that Hanning had experienced financial difficulties in recent years, although investigators have not publicly linked those concerns to the current allegations.
The espionage investigation is unfolding alongside the ongoing trial in Hamburg related to the alleged attempted abduction of the Block family's children.
While prosecutors continue to examine the circumstances of the children's transfer from Denmark to Germany, the new allegations against Hanning have broadened the scope of scrutiny surrounding the case.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the evidence underlying the espionage accusations, and Hanning has not publicly responded to the latest allegations.
