Flávio Bolsonaro and Lula head for Brazil presidential run-off

Brazil is heading for a closely fought presidential run-off between right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after Bolsonaro narrowly led the first round with 47 per cent of the vote to Lula’s 45 per cent. Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, said the result showed Brazilians wanted change, while his stronger-than-expected performance boosted investor confidence. The election was largely peaceful, although Brazilian authorities have opened an investigation into alleged foreign interference as the country prepares for the 25 October run-off.

Latvia election: United List wins amid Russia tensions

Latvia’s centrist, pro-Ukraine United List part won Saturday’s parliamentary election by a wide margin, taking 36.6 per cent of the vote with 88 per cent of ballots counted. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs will need coalition partners to form a government, while security concerns linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine dominated the campaign. The result also saw gains for populist and pro-Russian parties, highlighting divisions over Latvia’s approach to the war and its Russian-speaking minority.

Bosnia and Herzegovina presidency: Three candidates win seats

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s three-member presidency is set for a new term after preliminary results showed Denis Bećirović winning the Bosniak seat, Darijana Filipović taking the Croat seat and Željka Cvijanović retaining the Serb seat. With more than 90 per cent of votes counted, the results also put the SDA and SNSD ahead in parliamentary contests, while turnout stood at 41.5 per cent.

Paraguay's Miguel Prieto-backed candidate wins Asunción mayoral election

Paraguay’s ruling Colorado Party suffered a major setback in Sunday’s municipal elections, losing control of Asunción after seven years. Opposition candidate Soledad Núñez narrowly won the capital with 47.78 per cent of the vote, while the opposition also secured a landslide victory in Ciudad del Este. The results could signal growing support for the opposition ahead of the 2028 presidential election and strengthen centrist leader Miguel Prieto’s prospects as a potential challenger to the ruling party.

Spain’s Sánchez calls snap election for 29 November

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called a snap general election for 29 November, putting his Socialist government’s future on the line after months of political setbacks and corruption allegations. His party is trailing in opinion polls, while a potential alliance between the conservative People’s Party and Vox could bring the far right into national government. Sánchez is hoping his housing policies and record on the economy will help revive support, but his fragmented coalition has struggled to pass legislation and has not approved a budget since 2023.
