Donald Trump has been elected US President after a closely-fought race against Kamala Harris. Trump secured more than the 270 electoral college votes needed to win the presidency, according to projections.
The 78-year-old former president will make a remarkable comeback, four years after being voted out of the White House. It makes him the first ever US candidate to be re-elected for a second term after losing an election in between.
In his victory speech, Trump labelled the moment “the golden age of America.”
“We’re going to help our country heal, we have a country that needs help, and it needs help very badly.”

Reaffirming a commitment from his first term, he promised to lead with the principle of "promises made, promises kept." Trump also appealed for unity:
“It’s time to put the divisions of the past four years behind us. It’s time to unite.”
“We’re going to start by putting America first. We need to put our country first for a period of time,” he added.
