Eurasian Economic Union looks at economic, trade cooperation

A meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan in a closed format. The heads of government of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states discussed current issues of cooperation within the union.

The high-profile talks were attended by the Heads of Governments of the member countries of the Union: the Republic of Belarus Roman Golovchenko, the Kyrgyz Republic Adylbek Kassymaliyev, the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin; Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Mher Grigoryan, Chairman of the Board of the EEC Bakytzhan Sagintayev. Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ali Asadov participated as a guest. 

During the meeting, the parties emphasised that the EAEU's GDP has shown steady growth, with preliminary figures indicating a 4% increase by the end of 2024. This was reported by the press service of the Kazakh government.

Azerbaijan’s Prime Minister highlighted the growing economic and trade cooperation between his country and EAEU member states, which resulted in 14% increase of trade turnover last year.

Asadov reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s intention to improve transport and transit cooperation with EAEU countries, as well as to enhance collaboration within international transport corridors passing through its territory. He noted that Azerbaijan had already turned into key transport and logistic hub of Eurasian continent, with increase of annual transit by 8%.

Participants also noted the need for joint efforts to come closer to the common vision of the Union, reflected in the declaration on further development of economic processes within the EAEU until 2030, including taking into account the latest trends in the development of the global economy, the emergence of new technologies and innovations. Particular attention was paid to such areas as the development of breeding, seed production of agricultural plants, livestock breeding, processing of agricultural products, expansion of agro-industrial complex infrastructure.

Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister, Olzhas Bektenov congratulated Belarus on assuming the EAEU Chairmanship in 2025. He expressed confidence that the decisions made would provide fresh impetus to integration processes.

In turn, the Prime Minister of Belarus, Roman Golovchenko, stated that his country’s chairmanship would focus on strengthening joint efforts in all areas of integration.
