Britain will set out a “comprehensive” package of measures over Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank in the coming weeks, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told MPs on Tuesday.
Miliband said Israel’s planned E1 settlement project would cut across land that Palestinians want for a future state and could make a two-state solution unworkable.
“This government will not acquiesce in the destruction of the two-state solution,” Miliband said, adding that the government would announce a “comprehensive” set of measures in the coming weeks.
Britain, along with several other European countries, has criticised Israel’s plans for E1, an area of land east of Jerusalem that Palestinians say is vital to maintaining a geographically connected future state.
According to the United Nations, E1 is an area of the occupied West Bank east of Jerusalem where Israel is advancing plans for thousands of settlement units.
The UN says the development could sever East Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank and disrupt its territorial continuity, making the establishment of a viable Palestinian state more difficult.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said before taking office that his government was considering measures to ban trade in goods from Israeli settlements deemed illegal under international law.
The Times reported on Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration was closely monitoring any plans by Britain to introduce such a trade ban.
