Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that Tehran is not pursuing a military conflict but promised a strong response to 'aggressors' while the Army and Revolutionary Guards said they carried out retaliatory attacks against U.S. bases in the region on Monday.
"We do not seek war, and this is a clear message that we have so far conveyed to the world. However, we will never sit idle in the face of aggression and will give a decisive response to aggressors,” the President’s Office quoted him as saying in a statement.
He spoke before flying to Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek to take part at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) 2026 Summit meeting.
Hours before to his departure, Iranian and U.S. militaries resumed attacks for the first time in weeks as the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) said targeted two U.S. airbases in Jordan early on Monday in response to the fatal attacks on the Larak Island at the Strait of Hormuz.
“The IRGC Aerospace Force used a combination of drones and ballistic missiles to target two U.S. Airbases of King Hussein and Al-Azraq in which maintenance infra-structure and deployment sites of fighter jets were heavily destroyed,” the Force said in a statement carried by its Sepah News website.
Meanwhile, the Defa Press portal dedicated to the news of Iran’s Armed Forces said that a U.S. military MQ-9 drone was shut down during the early hours of Monday.
“The long-range unmanned aircraft was hit over the Strait of Hormuz by our advanced air defence batteries,” read an IRGC statement.
Defa Press also quoted the IRGC Navy as saying that a supertanker, which intended to navigate through the waterway violating the force’s regulations, caught fire after being hit by two sea mines.
Following the latest exchange of fire in a month, the Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the U.S. strikes, stressing that Tehran has every right to target U.S. bases and interests in self-defence -- as it struck American bases in Jordan, from which Iran said the U.S. launched the deadly attack on Larak Island.
“The U.S. once again violated the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iran by attacking parts of Larak Island, as a result of which several servicemen were martyred and wounded, and damage was inflicted on public and private property,” it said.
Iran has again urged the UN Security Council and Secretary-General to condemn the U.S. attack.
