The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) Ebola outbreak has spread to a sixth province. A man died of the virus in Bas-Uélé in the north, the African Union’s health agency said.
Jean Kaseya, Director General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, said the case involved a man who died after developing haemorrhagic symptoms consistent with Ebola.
The victim, who was a motorcycle taxi driver, travelled westwards from Haut-Uélé to Buta, the capital of Bas-Uélé, and visited several medical centres before his death, according to local media reports citing officials.
Cases of Ebola have now been reported in the following provinces of the DRC: Bas-Uélé, Haut-Uélé, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, and Tshopo - all in the northeast of the country of 116.5 million.
Ituri, which borders Uganda, is the epicenter of the epidemic caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain. The outbreak has killed 2,061 people and 4,449 cases have been recorded since it was declared in May.
Kaseya, speaking at a virtual press conference from the Central African Republic’s capital Bangui, added that the epidemic was not under control, with nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) of deaths occurring in communities, rather than treatment centres.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday that the outbreak in the DRC is "on track to eclipse" the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic at its current pace.
It is already the second-biggest Ebola epidemic on record and is spreading faster than any previous outbreak, according to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
