An overnight Ukrainian drone attack on Russia’s Black Sea port city of Novorossiysk killed an eight-year-old child, injured others and damaged residential buildings, port infrastructure and grain facilities, Russian officials and industry sources said on Wednesday.
Novorossiysk Mayor Andrei Kravchenko said four enterprises and more than two dozen residential buildings were damaged in the attack. Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said another person was killed elsewhere in the region and several others were injured.
Russian industry sources said the attack put two major grain terminals out of action. Demetra Holding said its Novorossiysk grain terminal was damaged, while the NKHP plant halted operations, according to Reuters sources.
Russia is the world’s largest wheat exporter, with much of its grain shipped through Black Sea ports. Industry officials have warned that continued attacks on export infrastructure could disrupt supplies and affect global food markets.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv had carried out the strike on Russia’s Novorossiysk naval base using drones, missiles and unmanned boats.
Novorossiysk has become a key base for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet after Ukrainian attacks repeatedly targeted Russian naval assets in Crimea.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said it intercepted and destroyed 502 Ukrainian drones overnight across several regions. It also said Russian forces struck a fuel depot in the Ukrainian port city of Odesa used to supply Ukraine’s military. Reuters could not independently verify the claims.
The attack came as the Financial Times reported that Ukraine had paused drone strikes on oil tankers using Novorossiysk following a request from U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
According to the report, Washington was concerned that attacks on vessels linked to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) could disrupt oil markets and affect Western companies operating in Kazakhstan’s energy sector.
Ukraine reportedly agreed not to target CPC infrastructure or non-Russian vessels unless they were under Ukrainian sanctions or carrying Russian oil or cargo. Reuters could not independently verify the report.
Novorossiysk is a major export hub for Russian commodities and a key route for Kazakh oil shipments through the CPC pipeline.
Black Sea drone attacks disrupted as much as a fifth of CPC oil loadings in July, according to sources cited by Reuters. Kazakhstan, which relies heavily on the route for crude exports, recorded a 14 per cent fall in oil production in July compared with June.
U.S. energy companies Chevron and Exxon Mobil are among the major Western firms operating in Kazakhstan.
The latest strikes come as Ukraine continues targeting Russian energy, logistics and military infrastructure, while Moscow carries out attacks on Ukrainian ports and other strategic facilities.
