Tehran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned of retaliation, after a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial ship in the Caspian Sea killed a sailor on Saturday.
Araghchi said that he had stressed to the European Union’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that the incident wouldn’t go ignored.
“In calls with EU High Rep Kallas and FM Lavrov, [I] made clear that what the freeloader in Kyiv did CANNOT GO UNANSWERED,” Araghchi wrote on X on Sunday.
Araghchi claimed that the assault was “done at Israel’s behest” in an attempt to drag Europe into the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran.
He added that the incident was a “blatant” violation of the principles of the United Nations.
Israel has not directly responded to the accusations, but Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 reported that Kyiv’s Ambassador to Israel had informed it that the ships were transporting Iranian weapons to Russia.
The Ukrainian attack on the vessel in the early hours of Saturday resulted in an explosion on board, killing one sailor and injuring others, according to Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv’s forces had struck a Russian warship and vessels used for transporting Iran-linked military cargo in the Caspian Sea.
"We also achieved very strong results with long‑range strikes in the Caspian Sea – including vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran," he said on X.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry added that it has summoned Ukraine's Chargé d'Affaires in Tehran to protest over the incident, which it described as "hostile and criminal", state news agency IRNA said.
The Iranian denunciation coincided with comments by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Kyiv had noted Russia was passing on to Iran its satellite observations in the Middle East, to enable it to direct strikes in the region.
