The Russian government announced on Sunday that it had taken control of two new settlements in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region.
According to preliminary information from the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russian forces have captured the village of Zelene, located approximately 7.5 kilometers south of Pokrovsk, a key military logistics hub in Ukraine.
The ministry also announced that they had seized the town of Velyka Novosilka, situated along the Vremivka front, an area known for intense fighting. This town is about 20 kilometers from the intersection of the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated on Telegram that “fierce battles” are ongoing near Pokrovsk, including around Zelene and Velyka Novosilka. However, the Ukrainian government has not yet commented on Russia’s claims.
Independent verification of these reports remains challenging due to the ongoing conflict.
It is worth noting that Russia launched its war in Ukraine in February 2022. However, separatist violence in the Donetsk region, close to the Russian border, has been ongoing since 2014.
