Second day of funeral prayers for Khamenei and family in Tehran

Funeral prayers for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and four members of his family are taking place in Tehran as Iran continues a week of mourning for its former supreme leader. Tens of thousands of mourners gathered over the weekend to pay their respects, with processions set to continue in Tehran on Monday and the holy city of Qom on Tuesday before Khamenei's body is flown to Iraq for further ceremonies and returned to Mashhad for burial next Thursday.

Trump delivers speech at U.S. 250th independence anniversary 

U.S. President Donald Trump addressed crowds at the U.S. 250th independenc anniversary celebrations after storms delayed the event, telling supporters that the weather would not stop the festivities. Thousands braved extreme heat and tight security to attend. While organisers described the event as a tribute to America's history and achievements, the event faced criticism over its increasingly political tone. 

Al Qaeda-linked groups claim coordinated attacks across Mali

Insurgents launched a wave of coordinated attacks on military positions across Mali on Saturday, stretching from the north to towns south of the capital, Bamako. The Malian army said it had regained control after repelling the assaults, while a Tuareg rebel alliance and an al Qaeda-linked group both claimed involvement. 

Trump offers to help end Ukraine war in call with Putin

U.S. President Donald Trump has told Vladimir Putin he is willing to help find a way to end the war in Ukraine during a 90-minute phone call ahead of next week's NATO summit. Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who described their conversation as "very good", as both sides signalled they would continue discussions on efforts to end the conflict.

France and Morocco set up World Cup quarter-final clash

France and Morocco are through to the World Cup quarter-finals after very different wins. Kylian Mbappé’s penalty helped France battle past a stubborn Paraguay side 1-0, while Morocco overcame Canada 3-0 thanks to two goals from Azzedine Ounahi and a late Soufiane Rahimi strike. The two sides will now meet in the last eight next Thursday.
