A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck southwest of Greece’s island of Crete on Saturday, with no immediate reports of damage.

The quake occurred at a depth of 13 kilometres and was located 69 kilometres south-southwest of Rethymno, on the island of Crete, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

Greece is one of Europe’s most earthquake-prone countries, as it lies near the boundary of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Crete and the surrounding seabed regularly experience seismic activity, though most tremors cause little or no damage.

This is a developing story.
