U.S. strikes Iran military sites, Tehran targets air base in response

The U.S. said it struck Iranian military sites over the weekend, while Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said that it had targeted a U.S. base in response. The U.S. Central Command said in a post on X that the strikes on Iran’s Gulf coast were carried out after “aggressive Iranian actions,” including the downing of a U.S. MQ-1 drone operating over international waters. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had targeted an air base used by U.S. forces in response to an attack on southern Iran.

U.S. puts forward new plan to ease Israel-Lebanon tensions

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on diplomatic efforts between Israel and Lebanon. A U.S. official said Rubio proposed a plan aimed at enabling “gradual de-escalation.” Under the proposal, as a first step, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group would halt attacks on Israel, while Israel would refrain from escalating strikes in Beirut, the official said.

Colombia’s De La Espriella and Cepeda advance to presidential runoff 

Colombian right-wing outsider Abelardo De La Espriella is set to face leftist Ivan Cepeda in a presidential runoff, according to initial voting results released on Sunday. De La Espriella received 43.7% of the vote, while Cepeda, a long-time senator and activist, won just under 41%, the data showed - a difference of around 668,000 votes. De La Espriella, who has never held elected office, has drawn comparisons with El Salvador's Nayib Bukele over his style and policy proposals.

Ebola recoveries in DRC offer hope as suspected cases appear outside Africa

Four nurses and a lab worker treated for Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo strain have recovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo, offering a rare sign of hope amid the outbreak. The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the country has risen to 282, with 42 deaths, after 19 new positive test results were recorded, according to data distributed by the communications ministry. Suspected cases are also being investigated outside Africa.

Ukrainian drones strike Russian pipeline, refinery and fuel depot overnight

Ukrainian drones struck targets across several Russian regions overnight, including an oil pipeline pumping station, a refinery and a fuel depot, Russian and Ukrainian authorities said on Sunday. Ukraine's General Staff said it had struck the Saratov oil refinery on the Volga river. Saratov regional governor Roman Busargin said on Telegram that "civil infrastructure" had been damaged in the strike, but gave no further details. Russia's Defence Ministry said it had downed 216 drones overnight.
