A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck China’s Guangxi region early on Monday, killing two people and forcing more than 7,000 residents in Liuzhou to evacuate as rescue efforts continued.

Two people were confirmed dead and one person remains missing, while four others were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to CCTV and Xinhua.

State broadcaster CCTV identified the victims as a couple - a 63-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman - and said search and rescue operations for the missing person were continuing.

Rescue teams were seen working through debris, with search dogs deployed to help locate survivors.

Buildings collapse and infrastructure checked

Thirteen buildings collapsed in the early hours of Monday.

Railway authorities also carried out inspections of rail infrastructure amid concerns over possible transport disruptions.

However, communication and power lines, along with water and gas supplies and traffic in the affected area, were reported to be operating normally.
