A five-storey residential building collapsed in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Sunday, 4 February, trapping an unknown number of people beneath the rubble, according to security sources.

The collapse occurred in the Bab al-Tabbaneh neighbourhood, a densely populated area of Tripoli. Rescue workers and local residents rushed to the scene, where three people were pulled alive from under the debris, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported.

Emergency teams deployed heavy machinery to clear the rubble and search for additional survivors, as concerns grew that more people could still be trapped inside the remains of the building.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the collapse, and the number of people inside the building at the time remains unclear. Security forces cordoned off the area as rescue operations continued.

Building collapses are not uncommon in parts of Lebanon, where ageing infrastructure, poor maintenance and years of economic crisis have raised safety concerns in many residential areas.

Rescue efforts were ongoing as night fell, with officials urging residents to stay clear of the site while search operations continue.
