U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner visited the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea on Saturday after completing a round of talks with Iran.
The carrier is part of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, the most visible element of a US military buildup in the Middle East following a violent crackdown on anti-government demonstrations in Iran last month. The unrest was the deadliest in the country since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The visit came amid heightened regional tensions as Washington seeks to combine diplomatic engagement with a show of military deterrence.
In a post on X, Witkoff said he, Kushner and Cooper met with “the brave sailors and Marines aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, her strike group, and Carrier Air Wing 9 who are keeping us safe and upholding President Trump’s message of peace through strength.”
The US military has increased its presence in the region in recent weeks as concerns grow over instability in Iran and the broader Middle East.
