Vladimir Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev is expected to travel to Miami on Saturday for meetings with members of Donald Trump’s administration, two sources familiar with the plans told Reuters.
The sources said Dmitriev, Russia’s envoy on foreign investment and economic cooperation, will hold discussions with U.S. officials, though the names of those taking part were not disclosed.
The visit comes as Washington signals a possible renewed push for diplomacy aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner would not attend the next round of Russia-Ukraine talks, although there “might be” some form of U.S. presence.
Trump said on Thursday he still sees a chance for successful negotiations to end the war.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Trump had personally asked Putin to refrain from strikes on Kyiv until 1 February.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia has almost entirely refrained from attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since the start of 30 January.
The Miami meetings are seen as a possible prelude to further diplomatic engagement between Washington and Moscow in the coming days.
