Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasised on Thursday that the Arctic remains a zone of Russia's strategic national interests, as Moscow continues to monitor international developments in the region.
Speaking to reporters, Peskov highlighted Russia's commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Arctic. He noted the Kremlin's close observation of what he described as "dramatic developments," referring to recent geopolitical discussions about the Arctic and Greenland.
Peskov also remarked on Europe's cautious reaction to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's statements about Greenland, describing their response as "timid" and "almost in a whisper." He suggested that respecting the opinions of populations in contested regions should be applied universally, drawing attention to Russia's stance on its newly integrated territories.
Russia has long maintained its presence in the Arctic, citing national and strategic interests, and views the region as a critical area for its economic and security priorities.
Visuals accompanying the report included views of the Kremlin and archival footage of Peskov, paired with audio excerpts from his remarks.
