President Donald Trump announced Thursday evening that the long-awaited “Board of Peace” to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction has officially been formed.
Trump said the board’s members will be revealed "shortly" and described it as "the Greatest and Most Prestigious Board ever assembled at any time, any place" in a post on Truth Social.
Trump first hinted at the board’s creation last September, saying it would be chaired by him and include current and former heads of state.
The announcement follows a recent update from U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, who said the second phase of a ceasefire under Trump’s 20-point plan to end the Gaza war has begun. The plan aims to reduce violence, support humanitarian access, and push for a longer-term resolution to the conflict.
Under phase one, Hamas and Israel agreed to a ceasefire in October, carried out a hostage-prisoner exchange, partially withdrew Israeli forces, and allowed a surge of humanitarian aid.
Phase two aims to move Gaza from ceasefire to full demilitarisation, reconstruction, and technocratic governance, including disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups.
Trump’s new board is expected to play a role in overseeing peace and reconstruction efforts, although details about its members and mandate have not yet been released.
He also announced that he was backing the newly appointed "Palestinian Technocratic Government" in Gaza.
"I am backing a newly appointed Palestinian Technocratic Government, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, supported by the Board's High Representative, to govern Gaza during its transition," Trump said on social media.
The Palestinian technocratic body will be overseen by the international "Board of Peace" that is meant to supervise Gaza's governance for a transitional period.
