U.S. says it struck Islamic State militants in Nigeria

The United States carried out a strike against Islamic State militants in northwest Nigeria at the request of Nigeria's government, President Donald Trump and the U.S. military said on Thursday, claiming the group had been targeting Christians in the region. Washington said the group had been targeting Christian communities in the region.

The strike follows repeated warnings by Trump in late October that Christianity faces what he described as an "existential threat" in Nigeria, and threats of U.S. military intervention over continued violence.

Ukraine and U.S. envoys discussed steps towards peace, Zelenskyy says

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy  said he held hour-long talks with senior U.S. envoys on ways to end the war with Russia.  Writing on Telegram on Thursday, Zelenskyy said he spoke with Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

"It was a really good conversation: many details, good ideas," Zelenskyy said, adding that discussions focused on possible formats, meetings and timelines.

Israeli military says Quds Force member killed in Lebanon

The Israeli military said it has killed a member of Iran’s Quds Force in Lebanon who was involved in planning attacks from Syria and Lebanon.  The man was identified as Hussein Mahmoud Marshad al-Jawhari, described as a key operative in Unit 840 of the force. He was killed in the area of Ansariyeh, the military said, without providing further details.

South Korea prosecutor seeks 10-year jail term for ex-President Yoon

South Korea’s special prosecutors have requested a 10-year prison sentence for former president Yoon Suk Yeol.Yoon faces multiple charges, including obstructing investigators attempting to arrest him following his failed bid to impose martial law. The request marks the first prison sentence sought by special prosecutors in the case.

Heavy rain triggers flash flooding across Southern California

Torrential rain unleashed widespread flash flooding and mud flows across Southern California on Wednesday, as authorities warned motorists to stay off roads while urging residents in flood zones to evacuate or shelter in place.

Emergency crews carried out dozens of rescues in the mountain resort town of Wrightwood, east of Los Angeles, after vehicles became trapped in floodwaters. Forecasters also issued a rare tornado warning for parts of east-central Los Angeles County amid severe thunderstorms over Alhambra.
