Missile development in North Korea is set to continue over the next five years. The country’s leader Kim Jong Un made the remarks during visits to major arms production facilities in the final quarter of 2025, the state news agency KCNA reported on Friday.

Kim described the missile and artillery production sector as "of paramount importance in bolstering war deterrence".

The report said Kim approved draft documents on the modernisation of key defence manufacturing enterprises.

The documents are due to be submitted to a ruling party congress expected to be held in early 2026, which is set to outline North Korea’s development strategy for the next five years.

The comments follow a KCNA report a day earlier that Kim inspected the construction of an 8,700-ton nuclear-powered submarine and attended the test-firing of long-range surface-to-air missiles.

He was accompanied by his daughter, who has appeared alongside him at several recent high-profile military events.
