Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has offered condolences to President Donald Trump following an ISIS attack near the ancient city of Palmyra that killed two U.S. soldiers and a civilian interpreter, Syrian and U.S. officials said Sunday.

In a statement, the Syrian presidency said al-Sharaa sent a message to Trump expressing sympathy over the deaths of the three Americans, who were killed Saturday in Syria’s Homs countryside. He condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with the victims’ families.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the Americans were killed when an ISIS gunman ambushed a patrol in the Palmyra desert area. Three additional U.S. service members were wounded in the attack and are receiving medical treatment.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday promised significant consequences for those responsible for an ISIS attack in Syria that killed two American troops and a civilian near Palmyra.

“The people that did it… there’ll be big damage done,” Trump said, adding that the gunman had been engaged and killed.

Syrian authorities said security forces launched operations against suspected ISIS cells in the Homs countryside following the attack, arresting five people.

U.S. forces operate in Syria as part of an international coalition formed in 2014 to defeat ISIS. Syria formally joined the coalition in November 2025, following the establishment of a new government after the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
