massive fire that swept through the Wang Fuk Court housing complex in Hong Kong’s northern district of Tai Po has claimed 83 lives, with nearly 300 residents initially reported missing, authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The blaze, described as the city’s worst in almost 80 years, largely engulfed the towers within hours, raising concerns over building safety and renovation practices.

Hong Kong police arrested three executives from Prestige Construction and Engineering Company, the firm responsible for the renovation work at the complex, on suspicion of manslaughter. Chief Executive John Lee said the arrests followed evidence collection and investigations into the building’s maintenance and the use of unsafe materials.

The 24-hour fire primarily affected towers wrapped in bamboo scaffolding and green mesh. Firefighters deployed 177 ambulances and managed to contain the blaze by the early hours of Friday. During operations, 11 firefighters were injured, with one confirmed fatality among emergency personnel.

Residents displaced by the fire were temporarily housed in nearby shopping malls and community shelters. Donations of clothes, food, and essential supplies poured in to support survivors. Many elderly residents expressed concern over housing shortages, with some having lost all possessions in the fire.

Satellite imagery confirmed the extensive damage caused by the blaze, showing charred tower blocks and collapsed scaffolding.

The Hong Kong Fire Services Department and authorities continue investigations into the fire’s cause, while rescue and support operations remain ongoing.
