French police shot and injured a knife-wielding man at Montparnasse train station in central Paris on Friday, according to the city's prosecutor's office.

The 34-year-old man was shot in the leg by a police officer after he threatened officers with a knife. He then proceeded to stab himself in the throat, but was quickly attended to by emergency services, the prosecutor's office reported.

A passer-by was also struck in the foot by one of the police shots, the statement added.

The man had been the subject of a domestic violence investigation by police from a southern suburb of Paris. In September, he had been handed an 18-month suspended sentence for multiple alleged domestic violence offences.

A Reuters photographer at the scene reported that the incident caused panic among commuters and weekend travellers, occurring just one day after France commemorated the 10th anniversary of the 2015 jihadist attacks in Paris, which left 130 people dead.

"The memory of the November 13 attacks is still fresh," said one witness, Elvire Vaisse. "I thought to myself, 'Here we go again.' Suddenly, I felt extremely stressed."
