Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Friday (24 October) that trade talks with Washington are progressing well. She declined to comment on U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to halt negotiations with Canada over Ontario’s anti-tariff advertisement.

“Let’s wait and see how relations with Canada develop. In the case of Mexico, we are quite far along,” Sheinbaum stated. She added that Mexico’s Economy Secretary will attend the APEC summit next week, where he will continue discussions with the Trump administration on agreements that are yet to be finalised.

When asked whether Mexico could continue negotiations with Canada on its own, Sheinbaum was cautious: “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

Trump announced on Thursday (23 October) that he was halting talks with Canada over the advertisement. On Friday, the U.S. President also accused Canada of attempting to influence the Supreme Court.

It is worth noting that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has removed most of the previous retaliatory tariffs, and the two sides have been in talks for several weeks to reach an agreement in the steel and aluminium sectors.
