Türkiye plans to acquire the necessary defence systems from its NATO allies and other partners until its domestically produced fighter jet, KAAN, is ready for delivery, a source from the Turkish Defence Ministry said on Thursday.

Reuters reported that Ankara had proposed to its European allies and the United States several options for quickly obtaining advanced fighter aircraft, including 40 Eurofighter Typhoons, F-16s, and F-35s, as President Tayyip Erdogan continues a regional tour to Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman.

A person familiar with the matter said Türkiye is close to finalising a deal with Britain that would see it receive 12 used Typhoon jets from Qatar and Oman to address its immediate defence needs.

Commenting on the reports, the Defence Ministry source confirmed that talks on the Typhoon procurement were ongoing with the United Kingdom and expected to conclude “within an appropriate timeframe.”

“Until the delivery of our national fighter jet KAAN begins, the systems required to fulfil the missions of the Turkish Armed Forces will be procured from relevant countries, primarily our allies,” the source said during a briefing in Ankara.
