Croatia's Presidential Election Heads to Runoff

Incumbent Zoran Milanovic and ruling party-backed Dragan Primorac are set for a runoff after Sunday’s presidential election, with Milanovic leading in early polls.

Croatia’s presidential election appears headed for a second round as incumbent Zoran Milanovic and Dragan Primorac, backed by the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), emerge as the leading candidates after Sunday’s vote.

A recent poll by public broadcaster HRT showed Milanovic, a former prime minister from the opposition Social Democrats, leading with nearly 39% support. Primorac, supported by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, trails with around 23%, while independent candidate Marija Selak Raspudic lags at 9%.

Milanovic, known for his populist approach, has frequently clashed with Plenkovic over policies and governance, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. Croatia’s president holds significant authority, including nominating the prime minister, dissolving parliament, and influencing foreign policy.
