China launched the Sichuan, its largest amphibious assault ship, designed to launch fighter jets and support global naval operations.
China launched its largest amphibious assault ship, the Sichuan, on Friday, marking a significant step in strengthening its navy’s capabilities for global operations. Displacing 40,000 tons, the Sichuan is equipped with an electromagnetic catapult, enabling it to launch fighter jets directly from its deck. It is designed to deploy ground troops via landing crafts while providing air support.
The ship also features advanced "arrestor technology" for jet landings. As the first vessel of the 076 type, the Sichuan builds on China’s naval modernization efforts, following the launch of the type 075 amphibious assault ships in 2019. This development follows China’s success in launching fighter jets using electromagnetic technology aboard the Fujian, its indigenously developed aircraft carrier.
The Sichuan enhances the People’s Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN) ability to operate further from the Chinese mainland, aligning with its decade-long effort to modernize for global naval operations. Chinese military expert Song Zhongping referred to the ship as a “light aircraft carrier.”
