Syria and Ukraine have restored diplomatic relations following a meeting between Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to Syria’s Foreign Ministry, the talks were attended by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and other officials.
Zelenskyy announced that the two countries signed a communique re-establishing ties. “We welcome this important step and are ready to support the Syrian people on their path to stability,” he posted on X, the U.S. social media platform.
He added that the leaders discussed potential areas of cooperation, shared security challenges, and agreed to base relations on mutual respect and trust.
Ukraine cut relations with Syria in 2022 after Damascus recognised the Russian-backed separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
