A Learjet 55 crashed on Wednesday while attempting to land at Simón Bolívar International Airport, Venezuela’s busiest air hub, prompting a temporary closure.

According to the National Institute of Civil Aviation (INAC), the aircraft experienced an unspecified issue shortly after beginning its descent in Maiquetía, near Caracas. Search and rescue protocols were activated, and two passengers were rescued alive. Both received immediate medical attention and are reported to be in stable condition.

The institute has not confirmed the total number of people on board or the flight’s destination. Emergency crews, including firefighters, brought the situation under control within minutes. While social media circulated images of black smoke rising from the runway, preliminary reports suggest there were no fatalities or damage to airport facilities.

Several flights were diverted, and operations were temporarily suspended to ensure passenger and staff safety.

INAC and other relevant agencies are expected to release further details regarding the flight’s crew, log, and cause of the crash.
